Mid-Norfolk Railway
Spring Gala 2010
Four Sulzer-engined locomotives journeyed by rail to Dereham to take part in this year's Spring Diesel Gala event.
Stratford 47 Group’s mainline certified 47580 County of Essex headed the cavalcade from Tyseley with
46045, 45133 and 26007 in tow.

During the three-day event, the four visiting locomotives performed well alongside Mid-Norfolk resident English Electric
classes; D8069 (20069), 50019 Ramillies and 73210 Selhurst. Of particular interest was the sight of a preserved loco
venturing South as far as the MNR boundary with Network Rail at Wymondham Junction.
All Classes can be seen working in various formations with the Railway’s blue/grey Mark 2 coaches
on this 78 minute DVD filmed by Mid-Norfolk volunteers Bernie Bland and David Roe

The summer of 2009 saw the welcome return to the Mid-Norfolk Railway
of Dennis Howells' immaculately-kept GWR Pannier tank 9466.
During her two-month stay, 9466 hauled a series of weekend steam
services between Dereham and Wymondham Abbey.
The DVD features lineside footage of this popular visitor filmed by
Mid-Norfolk Railway volunteer David Roe.

On 25 April 2009 N7 69621 became the first Great Eastern designed locomotive to haul revenue paying passengers over
the former Wymondham Wells line since the early 1960s.
Normally based at the North Norfolk Railway, the East Anglian Railway Museum-owned locomotive is seen
working over the Mid-Norfolk line between Dereham and Wymondham Abbey during its two-weekend visit.

2009 Spring Diesel Gala

"Heavy Haulage" featuring the return of 56040 Oystermouth

Heavy Haulage was the theme of the 2009 Spring Diesel Gala which saw no less than nine locomotives in action over the weekend. Amongst the highlights of the event was the return to service of newly-restored 56040 Oystermouth
after her two-year restoration program at Dereham.
DB Schenker (formally EWS) provided four visiting mainline locomotives, Class 66144, Class 67008, Class 60059 Swinden Dalesman and Class 37425 Pride of the Valleys / Balchder y Cymoedd.
Dereham stable mates completed the impressive line-up with, D8069, 31438, 50019 Ramillies,
73210 Selhurst, and 56040 Oystermouth.
Captured on video by Mid-Norfolk Railway volunteers David Roe, Bernie Bland and Josh Quirk.
All locomotives can be seen running in various formations and weather conciliations on this 60 minute DVD.

Stratford 47 Mini-Gala


A DVD featuring video footage from the event captured by Mid-Norfolk volunteer David Roe.
On the 28th February 2009 in conjunction with the Stratford 47 Group, the Mid-Norfolk Railway held a class 47 running day. Five return journeys hauled by Ex Stratford 47’s were made between Dereham and Wymondham Abbey.
Locomotives featured 47 596 ’ Aldeburgh Festival’ 47 580 ’County of Essex’ and 47 584 ‘County of Suffolk’

A Journey from Dereham to Wymondham Abbey in the cab of visiting Class 47 580 ”County of Essex”. On the final day of the 2008 Santa Specials. Mid-Norfolk videographer David Roe ably assisted by fellow cameraman and volunteer Fred Chapman captured the entire 34-minute journey on film.

“A Trackside View”
Summer and Autumn 2008

A DVD featuring action-packed events at the Mid-Norfolk Railway
during the summer and autumn of 2008.

Running at weekends throughout July and August Dennis Howells 0-6-0 Pannier Tank 9466 made a welcome third visit to Mid-Norfolk in 2008. demonstrating once again the popularity of the steam locomotive. On the 6th & 7th of September to mark the 40th anniversary of the closure of the Dereham to Kings Lynn line in 1968. The railway operated an intensive DMU service between Dereham & Wymondham based on the original 1960s timetable. An interesting collection of local photographs and railway artifacts were displayed in the station at Dereham.
Resident locomotives 31438, class 20 (D8069) were joined by visiting DRS 20307 & 20315 for the Autumn Diesel Gala held on the 19th 20th & 21st of September. The intensive program saw services in many varied combinations over the weekend including the début of M-NR resident Class 08 08631 “Eagle” which with 31438 as company headed the “Beerex train to Wymondham Abbey without a drop being spilt!.
On the 25th of September we see class 73 73210 “Selhurst” arriving at Wymondham Main towed by 73136 “Perseverance”. Both were destined for the Mid-Norfolk Railway and are seen taking part in the English electric event which was staged on the 27th and 28th of September. Owned by the class 73 group, 73210 has become the latest addition to the Mid-Norfolk Railway diesel fleet at Dereham. All this and more on this 65 minute DVD

2006 Autumn Diesel Gala


A DVD which features video footage from the Mid-Norfolk Railway 2006 Autumn Diesel Gala,
Chapter One begins at Dereham where we see Class 50 (50019) ‘Ramillies’ topped and tailed with Class 31 (31538)
as they depart platform 3 with the first service train of the day. DRS Class 37 (37259) was the welcome guest locomotive for this years autumn event, undoubtedly (along with the fine weather) responsible for the high attendance figures. Some of the crew members traveled from as far- a-field as Carlisle. Understandably most of the sequences in this film features the star of the weekend 37259 which can be seen at various locations along the line.
Chapter Two, “The Fish n’ Chip Special” is a short sequence showing friends and family along with volunteers and other passengers enjoying a round trip from Dereham to Wymondham behind 37259 with 31538 at the rear.
The return trip saw the two run in tandem with 37259 piloting 31538.

Battle of Britain Class Pacific
“Tangmere” visits the Mid-Norfolk Railway

A DVD featuring unique footage of “Battle of Britain” Class Pacific 34067 “Tangmere” on Mid-Norfolk Railway metals.
The visitor replaced failed V2 “Green Arrow” which was originally scheduled to haul “The East Anglian” Railtour specials
on Saturday May 5th from Dereham to London and Norwich to Scarborough on Monday 7th May.

With watering and inspection facilities now installed and working at Dereham, the Mid-Norfolk was the Ideal stabling
location for the locomotive. Visitors and enthusiasts gathered to enjoy the sights, sounds and smell of the Bullied Pacific,
as Sunday’s service trains were steam hauled by the eminent guest.

Diesel Gala Weekend Spring 2007

The Mid-Norfolk Railway's Spring 2007 Diesel Gala saw the launch into traffic of the ‘Stratford 47 Group’s 47596 “Aldeburgh Festival”. 47596 was resplendently turned out in her newly applied BR blue “Stratford” livery, depicted by the silver roof, a prominent feature of Stratford 47’s. A welcome visitor to the event was the South East Locomotive Group’s (SELG’s)
Class 33065 “ Sealion”. The locomotive stayed at the Mid-Norfolk for a further three weeks following the Gala and saw regular passenger operations, including a SELG Charter on March 30th.

9466 visits the Mid-Norfolk Railway
May and June 2007


2007 saw the welcome return to the Mid-Norfolk Railway of Dennis Howell's GWR Pannier tank 9466. Always a popular visitor to the line, 9466 hauled a series of weekend and bank holiday steam services during her two-month stay at the railway.
Chapter one and two features video footage of 9466 during her stay during May and June at the Railway.
For one day only, the train stopped at Hardingham to enable passengers to travel to Hardingham village fete. A Special bus service was laid on for the occasion in the form of a 1959 built Bristol MW5G, beautifully restored in Eastern Counties burnt maroon and primrose livery. LS 789 is part of the Eastern Transport Collection.

Chapter Three features a short film "A day at the Mid-Norfolk Railway".
After a successful month-long visit to the Mid-Norfolk Railway in 2006, 9466 is seen working her last day of public services on Saturday 3rd June. The film begins with a slideshow of pictures, which were captured on the day and ends similarly with some pictures from the "Transport through the Decades" event, held at Dereham Station on 17th June 2006, plus a couple of scenes from the northern section of the line County School and Worthing.

2007 Autumn Diesel Gala


For their ever popular Autumn Diesel Gala, the Mid-Norfolk Railway’s resident fleet were joined by two visiting locomotives courtesy of DRS. Both locomotives, Class 37/5 No.37688 “Kingmoor TMD” and Class 57/0 No.57011 were pristinely turned out, with the “DRS Anglia On A Mission” headboard being proudly carried by each loco in turn.

The weekend featured an intensive timetable beginning on a very misty Saturday morning with an earlier than usual departure. The 08:00 service was hauled by MNR based 47596 “Aldeburgh Festival” with the newly restored blue-grey Mk 2 carriages, which were used throughout the gala weekend. Saturday evening saw the increasingly popular fish and chip
special depart Dereham topped and tailed by 47596 and D8069.
Pre-gala footage of D8069 in service on August 24th 2007 is also included.
